Progress builds progress: Accelerating the journey towards gender equality

Progress doesn’t happen by chance.

It happens when we recognize how far we’ve come, share what works, challenge what holds us back, and take action together.

Gender equality is one of the most important challenges of our time.

While progress has been made, significant gaps remain in women’s access to opportunities, resources, leadership, and the ability to shape the decisions that affect their lives.

Progress Parity as an IWD 2027 campaign theme, is built around a powerful, forward-looking philosophy: Progress builds progress.

The idea is simple, but its potential is enormous.

Every step forward creates an opportunity for the next.

Every barrier removed makes it easier for others to follow.

Every success shared can inspire new ideas, stronger commitments, and meaningful action elsewhere.

Imagine what we could achieve if we built on progress together, turning individual achievements into collective momentum and accelerating the journey toward gender equality.

That’s the ambition behind #ProgressParity. Visit the IWD 2027 campaign webpage here.

Moving beyond representation to real equity

Progress toward gender equality is about more than numbers.

Representation matters, but true parity means creating the conditions in which women have equitable opportunities to participate, lead, innovate, access resources, and thrive.

That means working toward a world where women can influence decisions at every level, take their place in leadership, and help shape the future of their communities, industries, and societies.

It means recognizing women as creators, innovators, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers, and ensuring they have equitable access to the funding, financing, technology, and other resources needed to turn ideas into reality.

And it means examining the systems, structures, and practices that continue to limit opportunity, then taking practical steps to change them.

The goal isn’t simply to count progress. It’s to make progress count.

Four ways to turn progress into momentum

Accelerating gender equality requires more than good intentions.

It calls for practical action, shared learning, and a willingness to keep moving forward.

The #ProgressParity campaign encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to focus on four interconnected areas.

1. Recognize and celebrate advancement

Progress deserves to be seen.

Every meaningful step toward gender equality, whether a major organizational achievement or a local community initiative, can help demonstrate what is possible.

Recognizing progress helps build momentum, reinforces positive change, and encourages others to take the next step. It also helps establish successful approaches as practices worth sustaining and building upon.

Take time to acknowledge what is working, celebrate achievements, and recognize the people making a difference.

Every milestone can become a starting point for further progress.

2. Share knowledge and inspire new approaches

We don’t have to start from scratch to make a difference.

Across the world, individuals, organizations, and communities are developing approaches that open doors, challenge inequality, and create opportunities for women.

Sharing those experiences helps others learn what works, discover new possibilities, and adapt successful ideas to their own circumstances.

Whether it’s an effective workplace initiative, a new approach to leadership development, a community-led project, or a resource that helps others take action, knowledge becomes more powerful when it is shared.

When we share what works, we multiply its potential to make a difference.

3. Challenge barriers and change what holds us back

Celebrating progress is important, but so is confronting the barriers that prevent further advancement.

These may include unconscious bias, unequal access to funding and opportunities, restrictive workplace practices, or systems that make it harder for women to participate, lead, and succeed.

Creating lasting change means being prepared to question established ways of working, identify where inequalities persist, and take practical steps to address them.

Every barrier challenged is an opportunity to create a fairer system.

Every improvement can make it easier for the next generation to move forward.

4. Inspire others to take action

Progress becomes even more powerful when it reaches beyond the people and organizations that initiate it.

By sharing achievements, demonstrating accountability, and making the impact of initiatives visible, we can encourage others to follow suit, build on successful ideas, and raise expectations of what is possible.

One organization's commitment can influence an industry.

One community's initiative can inspire another.

One person's decision to act can encourage many more to do the same.

The more we learn from one another and build on what works, the greater our collective potential to accelerate change.

Making impact visible, actionable, and measurable

Ambition is essential, but lasting progress also requires accountability.

To move from aspiration to achievement, gender equality initiatives need to demonstrate not only what they stand for, but what they are doing and what difference they are making.

Three principles help bring this into focus.

  • Visibility matters.
Make inequalities, achievements, and opportunities for improvement visible. Keeping gender equality on the agenda helps maintain attention, encourage dialogue, and recognize where further action is needed.

  • Action matters.
Move beyond statements of support to practical changes. This might mean improving access to leadership opportunities, reviewing recruitment and promotion practices, addressing funding gaps, or investing in initiatives that advance women.

  • Measurable progress matters.
Establish clear objectives, monitor outcomes, and use evidence to understand what is changing. Measuring progress helps identify effective approaches, highlight remaining gaps, and strengthen accountability for future results.

These principles help ensure that progress is not simply declared, but demonstrated.

And the need is urgent. The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report has consistently highlighted how long the journey to full gender parity could take if progress continues at its current pace. The message is clear: we cannot afford to be complacent.

We need to do more than hope for change. We need to help make it happen.

Every contribution can move us forward

Gender equality is not the responsibility of one organization, one sector, or one group of people. It is a shared endeavor, and there are many ways to contribute.

Organizations can examine their policies, practices, and opportunities for advancement.

Leaders can champion equitable access to decision-making and resources.

Educators and communities can share knowledge and challenge limiting assumptions.

Individuals can support women-led initiatives, amplify women's achievements, mentor others, and speak up when barriers stand in the way.

Some actions may transform an entire organization. Others may begin with a single conversation, a new connection, or the decision to share an idea that helps someone else move forward.

What matters is that we keep building.

No single initiative will close every gap. But when practical actions are repeated, successful approaches are shared, and progress in one place inspires progress elsewhere, their combined impact can be significant.

That is the power of progress building on progress.

Progress starts with us. The next step is ours to take.

International Women's Day 2027 is an opportunity to recognize how far we have come, reflect on what still needs to change, and turn our shared ambition for gender equality into meaningful action.

But the opportunity extends far beyond one day.

So, what can you do to help accelerate progress?

Celebrate an achievement.

Share knowledge.

Challenge a barrier.

Support a woman’s ambition.

Open a door that has been closed for too long.

Measure the impact of an initiative.

Inspire another person or organization to take action.

Whatever your role, your contribution matters.

Because when we connect our efforts, share what works, and build on every step forward, we create something greater than individual progress. We create collective momentum for lasting change.

Let’s recognize progress.

Let’s build on what works.

Let’s challenge what holds us back.

And let’s inspire others to join us.

Every step forward creates the opportunity for another. Progress builds progress.

Together, let’s accelerate the journey to gender equality.

Get involved. Take action.
