Perhaps the most important aspect of the event is our public call for a National Commission on Black Women & Girls.
Why do we need a commission, you ask?
Because, the negative narratives about Black women that are rooted in colonial times persists and is literally killing us.
Black women have poorer maternal health outcomes than white women, are affected by the race-gender pay gap and are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, the mental health system, are diagnosed with cancer at a later stage than white women, fare worse in the cost-of-living crisis and on high on the agenda this week is Black femicide and the poor response from the system to recognise the disparity and act.
I could go on....All of these things have one thing in common, but society discusses them as 'isolated issues'.
The Commission on Black Women and Girls will examine and explore the interconnectedness and the causes and seek recommendations for policy changes.
We urge you to join us at the start of the journey of social change for Black women and girls in the UK.
