A global network of women

Avon strives to create a world where every woman feels empowered, where every woman is independent, inspired and self-fulfilled. At Avon they believe that they can make this happen through entrepreneurship and through beauty. For over 130 years Avon has built an unrivalled female network, spanning generations and geographies around the world - the global network of six million Avon Representatives is a sisterhood of women who manage their own businesses by sharing the beauty products they love.

At the same time, Avon is an iconic beauty brand, proud of delivering quality, innovation and great value to the women who enjoy their products across the world.

Avon the company for women

In 1886, 34 years before women in the U.S. earned the right to vote, Avon's founder, David H. McConnell, helped give them the chance to earn an independent income.

He didn't set out to create a beauty company. In fact, McConnell was a traveling book salesperson and offered beauty products as an additional perk to his female customers. He saw that these women were more interested in the free perfume samples than the books – and that many of them stayed at home while their husbands went off to work. Since women had a passion for his products and loved networking with other women, McConnell was inspired to recruit them as Sales Representatives. From a small New York City office, McConnell himself mixed the company's first fragrances.

This began Avon’s long history of empowering women around the globe.

  • 95 Years before the first woman was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court ...
  • 77 Years before the first woman travelled into space ...
  • 76 Years before the first woman took the reins of a Fortune 500 company ...
  • 34 Years before women in the U.S. had the right to vote ...
  • 17 Years before the first woman won the Nobel Prize ...

Avon offered women the opportunity to be CEOs of their own businesses and control their economic destinies. Avon has been empowering women for over 130 years.

The beauty of doing good

For over 60 years, the Avon Foundation for Women has been a driving force behind charitable, scientific, educational and humanitarian work that improves the lives of women and their families. Empowering women is part of Avon's DNA - they know that when women are empowered, they empower others. Avon is passionate about causes that impact women and is proud to lead the fight against breast cancer and domestic violence. Globally, Avon philanthropy has donated more than $1 billion as one of the world's largest supporters of women's causes.

Efforts to eradicate breast cancer and end domestic and gender violence worldwide have helped move these issues out of the shadows and into the public dialogue. And as attitudes continue to change - from fear and isolation to knowledge, action and empowerment - so do the lives of countless women everywhere

Since 2004, the Avon Foundation's Speak Out Against Domestic Violence initiative has been a powerful voice for women, with programs in 50 countries and in almost all 50 U.S. states. The program has served 11 million women, educated 29 million about domestic violence, and contributed nearly $60 million to empowerment programs.
