World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts mobilized its Movement to #ChooseToChallenge
August 13, 2021
For over 100 years Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting has transformed the lives of girls and young women worldwide, supporting them to feel confident to take the lead and create a better, fairer, more equal world together.
Representing over 8.9 million girls and women from 152 countries, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the largest volunteer-led Movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world and has been a Charity of Choice for International’s Women’s Day since 2007.
To support the IWD 2021 theme, WAGGGS ran a specially designed campaign encouraging Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the world to mark IWD with their own #ChooseToChallenge messages.
Mobilizing a worldwide community of millions
To engage as many girls and young women as possible, WAGGGS created a bespoke ‘Choose To Challenge’ visual identity that would appeal to Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of all stripes - whether a Brownie, Rainbow, or even a Guide Leader.
These visuals, and the Choose To Challenge stories that were gathered to sit alongside them, proved extremely popular, and were shared widely across their worldwide Movement by staff, volunteers, supporters, and girls alike. They also successfully launched IWD ambassadors, and their NGO and corporate partners took a keen interest in collaborating with them to mark the day.
Listening to girls' needs
They also hosted a never tried before online event, involving Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from more than 40 countries and several influential world leaders. Over 4,000 watched online as girls as young as 12 years old held leaders like Jayathma Wickramanayake, the UN Youth Envoy, accountable, asking them to listen to girls and their needs, and ensure that their peers do the same.
Significant worldwide activity
The overall engagement from girls and young women from across the Movement was truly breath taking - and saw WAGGGS tagged in thousands of #ChooseToChallenges pledges across social media.
It was plain for all to see that gender equality is something that this Movement is dedicated to, and they have now set their sights on making more noise than ever for IWD 2022.
Partner with WAGGGS via financial support
WAGGGS will continue to deliver their very important and relevant programmes across the world, programmes that are helping tackle gender-based violence and malnutrition, climate change and period poverty, at an impressive scale. But in order to do this, this Movement - a Movement that’s driven by the passion and goodwill of its largely female volunteer base - needs financial support.
WAGGGS needs help to continue their important work, and they need to do more of it. Only then will we realise their brilliant vision of an equal world where all girls can thrive - so please get in touch.
