Nomi Network helped Phirum in Cambodia break cycles of exploitation for her and her family

IWD GIVING sees a continuing focus on supporting the supporters in delivering impactful work that helps forge women's equality.

IWD GIVING member, Nomi Network, has a mission to end human trafficking by creating pathways to safe employment, empowering women and girls to break cycles of exploitation in their families and communities and rewrite the narratives for future generations.

Here we meet Phirum, who lives with her two school-aged children in the Svay Chek district in the Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia. With the support of Nomi Network's Workforce Development program, Phirum received technical job skills training that secured her safe employment, and broke the cycle of exploitation.

From a promise of hope to a reality of exploitation

Phirum ceased her studies when she was 17 years old. Her parents could not afford to support her studies and she neded to work in the rice field as her parents were older and needed help.

By 19 years of age, Phirum and her husband went to Thailand for the promise of a good job in construction. Within a year, they returned home as they were cheated out of pay and were exploited for free labor.

Enrolling on Nomi Network's program

Phirum learned about trainee recruitment from her village chief, and so enrolled in the Workforce Development program with Nomi Network Cambodia.

Phirum was dedicated to completing the program and was very supportive of her fellow classmates. She completed the program by attending the 15-day training on Sewing Operator Skills at the Cambodian Garment Training Institute in Phnom Penh.

Securing a job and getting a promotion

Phirum secured a job with Techno Park Co, LTD in Poipet. She quickly advanced and was then promoted to the position of General Assistant.

“I am proud of my job. I never thought that I had a secure job before. I keep saving 100 USD every month. I have 500 USD in my savings account, which I opened while attending FP1. With this salary, I can support my children in going to school. Thanks to Nomi Network Cambodia for giving me this opportunity to have safe employment," says Phirum.

“I wish (more) women in my community would have the opportunity to get a secure job so they can improve their living conditions to support their children to go to school," encourages Phirum.
