Artist Susanne Neumann supports the IWD creative mission

Art can be an effective form of social activism to inspire change. In particular, visual art has the power to overcome cultural and language barriers, connecting global creatives under the same mission.

Each year the IWD Lettering Challenge, in association with the global Typism community, calls for creative designs that support an annual IWD focus and showcase the impressive talent of creators.

The challenge aims to raise awareness, showcase talent, and provide visibility for creatives while supporting gender equality.

Here, we shine a spotlight on one creative, Susanne Neumann, and showcase her fabulous IWD 2026 Give to Gain design.

Reconnecting with her creativity

IWD typism letters

Susanne has lived in Berlin since 2012. It was in Berlin that one of the most important people in her life reconnected her with her creativity, which she felt she had lost for many years.

It all started with a pencil and a passion for drawing. Then Susanne had the idea to design and sell individually painted bags – an exciting chapter that culminated in her self-employment in 2015. Since then, Susanne has lovingly and carefully painted and sold countless bags.

"Every custom request still brings a smile to my face!" says Susanne.

Expanding her creative skills

But it didn't stop there. Susanne's creative journey continued, this time into the world of watercolor art. Over time, Susanne's repertoire expanded to include gouache and other techniques, enabling her to bring art to a wide variety of surfaces.

"This is how most of my illustrations are created – and from these, in turn, my lovingly designed paper products," explains Susanne.

Discovering her love for lettering

Susanne began designing paper products, which she sold online and at various markets. With each new project, her product range grew, and new items were added.

In 2017, Susanne finally discovered her love for lettering.

"The beginning wasn't easy – but I think that's true for many people who are tackling a new subject. To everyone just starting out in this world: don't lose heart! It takes time, patience, and practice. Looking back now, I'm incredibly proud of how far I've come and how my skills have developed," says Susanne.

Transitioning to digital art

In 2022, Susanne finally took the plunge into the digital world and bought a tablet. Since then, she has enjoyed the freedom to be creative anywhere, with just one device, which she describes as a true asset to her daily work.

"With the introduction of a tablet into my creative process, a lot has changed. Suddenly, entirely new possibilities and advantages opened up. Painting on a tablet has its own unique appeal: It's incredibly convenient, requires hardly any materials, and I can realize my ideas anywhere. If you have the opportunity to try it, do so. It could enrich your creative life! Even though I now work analogue less often because the digital realm is often more practical, that doesn't mean I'll ever put down my paintbrush," says Susanne.

"For me, creativity isn't limited to painting. There are countless ways to be creative, regardless of the medium or method. Over time, I've also discovered various craft techniques, including bookbinding and stamping. As a self-taught individual, I've passionately and patiently immersed myself in these areas. Through much experimentation and trial and error, I've refined my skills step by step until I finally mastered them." she says.

Sharing her passion with the world

Susanne started offering creative workshops, from hand lettering and stamp carving to bookbinding, but decided to take a break from tutoring for a while.

"Creativity is my passion, and when I teach, I do so with complete conviction and enthusiasm," explains Susanne.

Since 2021, Susanne has been involved in community work. As Vice Chair of Lettering in Germany, she has been actively involved in the community.

"I work with a fantastic team to develop creative projects, connect the community, and share our passion for lettering. It's incredibly rewarding to be part of this network. If you're interested, feel free to drop by and become a member," says Susanne.
