Book IWD Speaker: Stephanie Flanders

Head of Economics & Politics at Bloomberg News, Former Chief Market Strategist for Britain & Europe at JP Morgan Asset Management & Former BBC News Economics Editor

Stephanie Flanders has built a career at the sharp end of economics, politics and public debate, moving fluently between policy, markets and media. She is currently Head of Economics and Politics at Bloomberg News, where she shapes global coverage of fiscal policy, geopolitics and macroeconomic risk for an international audience.

Before joining Bloomberg, Stephanie was Chief Market Strategist for Britain and Europe at JP Morgan Asset Management. In that role, she advised institutional investors during periods of major uncertainty, translating complex economic signals into clear strategic insight. She has also worked as the Economics Editor of BBC News, becoming one of the most recognisable voices explaining the global financial crisis to the public.

Stephanie joined BBC Newsnight in 2002 and has also presented Stephanomics on BBC Radio 4, a programme known for calm, forensic analysis rather than noise. Her media work is underpinned by deep academic and policy experience, including time as an economist at the London Business School and the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and as a writer and columnist at the Financial Times.

She also served as a speechwriter and advisor to US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H Summers, working at the heart of economic policymaking during a critical period for the global economy. Alongside this, she is a Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, maintaining close ties to research and education.

Stephanie is now widely hired as a speaker for International Women’s Day events because she embodies authority, credibility and substance in fields where women remain underrepresented. She speaks with clarity about leadership, economic power and decision-making, drawing on lived experience at the top of global institutions. At a recent corporate event, she used the lessons of the 2008 financial crisis to explore why diverse voices improve judgement under pressure, a message that resonated long after the room emptied.
