Sophia Ngugi
Gender specialist with expertise in international humanitarian and development non governmental organisations
Sophia is a gender expert with 18 years’ international experience in the development and humanitarian sector working as frontline staff and in offering technical support to country programs.
She has expertise in gender and gender-based violence (GBV), including designing GBV prevention and response programming for GBV in an emergency; movement building, women’s rights advocacy & women’s socio-economic empowerment; young women in leadership, gender and governance, protection and youth programs.
She is a mentor and has skills in public speaking. Some of her previous public speaking engagements include for 2019 international women’s day celebrations at Tullow Kenya, guest speaker at Rotary Club of Nairobi East, a panelist in global forums including the CSW, women deliver conference, and at round table event at British Embassy Copenhagen among others. She is a member of the Toastmasters club and mentor for girls and youth.
Sophia is currently working at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as a Senior Technical Advisor, supporting the global work on participation and women’s movement building at IRC. Previously, she worked as Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) Technical advisor for the East Africa countries.
She provided technical support for WPE programs in Uganda, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.
She holds a Master’s degree in Gender and Development, a Master’s in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, and a BA in Sociology.
Her previous work has been with different INGOs, including Mercy Corps, Women for Women International in South Sudan, and other Kenya National NGOs.
