Aminat Ayodele
Passionate advocate on Girl Child Rights, Women Empowerment, and Prevention and Management of Abuse
Aminat Ayodele is an independent women empowerment advocate. Her areas of interest include women financial empowerment, girl-child health, education, and prevention and management of abuse.
She has executed many small-scale projects which include the Village Savings and Loans Scheme for rural women in the Northern Nigeria particularly in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, which has helped many families sustain a financial breakthrough they never imagined, education on hygiene and provision of sanitary pads to the young Al-Majirai girls (less privilege) in the Northern part of Nigeria.
Her interest in women empowerment was aroused during her employment with Oxfam in Nigeria as a Procurement and Logistics Officer, where she had the opportunity to understand the challenges women were facing while working on the food security and resilience project. This made her to volunteer herself for the betterment of humanity by sensitizing women and girls on speaking about their personal development issues, denial of rights (education and welfare), abuse and harassment.
A case of a young girl of about 16 years old who was also able to confide in her by sharing her personal problems as regards her reproductive life during one of her interventions also got her worried about other issues young girls are facing which they might be finding difficult to discuss and how guardians could deal with young and teenage girls in their custodies.
The urge to give voice to every females irrespective of status, ethnic, background made her establish an online female only community on Facebook which she named "The Female Speak Up" and since October 2020 when the group was created, Aminat has been able to win the heart of more than 150 members organically through her consistent post and management of the group.
Aminat also started the Almajiri Welfare Project in Kebbi State, Nigeria before leaving the country which was targeted at homeless young boys and girls in the state. This project has supported the welfare of more than 700 children (boys and girls) and had run for three consecutive years with support from friends and families through social media fund raising and good coordination of activities by Aminat.
She is currently volunteering for Oxfam in the UK as a speaker and her recent speaking engagement was a panel discussion on women's right and the effect of cutting down the UK aid budget on charities which was organized by the Women Equality Network (WEN), Wales in December, 2020.
